Burn Bright, Burn Safe - Candle Best Practices

Burn Bright, Burn Safe - Candle Best Practices

Candles have a magical way of creating warmth, ambiance, and comfort. Whether you're setting the mood for a quiet night in or simply adding a cosy glow to your living space, knowing how to use candles safely and effectively can make all the difference. Here are some essential candle best practices to help you get the most out of your favourite scents while keeping safety front and centre.

1. Trim the Wick Every Time

Before lighting, trim the wick to about ¼ inch (6 mm). A properly trimmed wick ensures a steady, even flame and minimizes soot and mushrooming (the black bulb at the tip of the wick). This small step also helps your candle last longer and smell better.

2. Let It Burn Long Enough

Allow your candle to burn until the entire surface has melted to the edges of the container — usually 1–3 hours depending on the size. This prevents tunnelling, where wax builds up on the sides and leaves unused product behind.

3. Don’t Burn for Too Long

Limit each burn to 4 hours max. Burning a candle for too long can overheat the container, cause the wick to “mushroom,” and affect the scent throw. After extinguishing, let the candle cool before relighting.

4. Keep It Clean

Make sure the wax pool is free of debris like wick trimmings, matches, or dust. These can catch fire and create uneven burns or excess smoke.

5. Use a Snuffer or Lid to Extinguish

Blowing out a candle can cause wax to splatter and may push smoke into the air. Instead, use a candle snuffer or gently place the lid to cut off oxygen and safely extinguish the flame.

6. Place Candles on Heat-Resistant Surfaces

Always burn candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, vents, curtains, and anything flammable. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

7. Stop Burning Before It’s Gone

Discontinue use when about ½ inch (1.2 cm) of wax remains. Burning a candle all the way down can overheat the container and may pose a fire risk.

8. Store Candles Properly

Keep candles in a cool, dark, dry place to preserve the fragrance and color. Avoid storing in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.

9. Know Your Candle Type

Different waxes (soy, beeswax, paraffin, coconut) and wick materials behave differently. Read the manufacturer’s recommendations and burn times for optimal results.

10. Practice Fire Safety

Never leave candles unattended or within reach of children or pets. Always double-check that the flame is out before leaving the room or going to sleep.

Final Glow

A little mindfulness goes a long way. By following these best practices, you can enjoy your candles longer, keep your home safe, and fully experience the soothing beauty they bring. So light up — responsibly!
